Vancouver to Singapore, Thailand, or The Philippines | from $636 roundtrip including taxes

A beach in the Philippines

There are some pretty crazy prices showing from Vancouver to a few Southeast Asia hub cities on Japan Airlines at the moment.

The cheapest verified prices I've seen so far are...

(roundtrip, including taxes)

Vancouver to Singapore (SIN) - $636 CAD
(this is a new record for the cheapest flight I've ever seen from Vancouver to Singapore, beating the old record, set in 2013, by $140)

Vancouver to Manila, Philippines (MNL) - $652 CAD

Vancouver to Bangkok, Thailand (BKK) - $674 CAD
(also a new record, besting the $723 flights that showed up in late 2013)

How to find and book these flights...

1. Start by searching with Google Flights Explore. Set the destination as 'Southeast Asia' or to one of the three cities listed above (Singapore, Manila, or Bangkok)

Also be sure to set the Trip Length to 10-14 days.

Note that Google Flights Explore displays prices in $USD.

Also note that Google Flights Explore is only showing departure dates up to March 19th, 2015. Yes, it's annoying. I've found departure dates with the cheaper prices a little bit beyond this, into April 2015.

You can also try the ITA Matrix which uses the same data as Google Flights Explore. It's more powerful (and will search past March 2015), but also a little more complex to use.

2. Look for cheap date combinations. Write them down.

3. Take those date combinations and the destination involved and enter them into Kayak.

From Kayak, hit the Select button to take you to a place where they can be booked. So far I've had the best luck with clicking through from Kayak to the American Airlines website.

You might be thinking, wait a minute, American Airlines? I thought these flights were through Japan Airlines? In fact, the flights are indeed operated by Japan Airlines, but bookable as a code-share flight through American Airlines. Welcome to the wacky world of airfares.

You can also try just searching directly on American Airline's website AA.com, but it's usually easier to use Kayak to play around with date combinations and flight times.

If the price is different, it means the flight has sold out at that price. You may want to try different date combinations until it's been determined that the deal is dead.

If you have trouble seeing the cheaper prices on Kayak, try the American version of Kayak. The prices will be listed in $USD, but when you click through from Kayak to American Airlines, the price will convert to $CAD.

This is not an advertised sale, so it's impossible to say how long it will be around. Typically, I find that really great unadvertised price drops go back up within 24 hours.
