Air Canada launches 'Rouge', a new leisure traveler focused airline - any good deals from Vancouver?

December
You may have heard that Air Canada was planning to start an LCC (low cost carrier) airline that caters to leisure travelers. Well today, they released some info on the name of the new carrier (Rouge), their slogan, and the first sampling of what destinations are available from Vancouver, and how much they'll cost.

Really? I could have sworn my French teacher said it meant 'red'...
Google Translate agrees.
But enough about that, let's take a look at what destinations are being offered through Rouge from Vancouver...
https://www.AirCanada.com/en/offers/air/rouge/rouge.html#YVR-INT
Looks like we have the following offers from YVR...
Vancouver - Athens, Greece $1196
Vancouver - Edinburgh, Scotland $1195
Vancouver - Venice, Italy $1195
The prices are roundtrip, after taxes, and valid on departure dates between July 1 and the end of October 2013.
My first thought is that is definitely a decent price to Greece from Vancouver, especially for peak summer travel. It's certainly cheaper than all other carriers at the moment.
Overall, perhaps nothing too mind blowing in terms of price. But even though many will look at Air Canada's past failures and predict a similar demise, I do hope that they succeed with this new venture. Ultimately, the more competition there is in the marketplace, the better it is for the consumer.
And if AC feels they can compete on routes and offer prices that are similar or lower to their low-cost competitors (ie: Air Transat), well, that's good news for those of us that like to travel.
And it does look like they're trying to offer destinations that are not currently served by low-cost carriers out of Vancouver, such as Greece and Venice. Air Transat flys to Amsterdam, the UK, and France out of YVR, but does not offer flights to Greece or Italy. They fly to Scotland, but only to Glasgow, not Edinburgh.
Hopefully this also means more opportunities for a crazy price drop to come around, giving yours truly more to blog about!

Let's Talk Turkey - A how-to guide for planning your trip

Back in mid June, KLM Canada held a little contest that resulted in some temporarily amazing prices to Istanbul from across the country. Judging by the number of e-mails, Tweets, and Facebook messages I received, I think it's safe to say there will be thousands more Canadians than usual visiting Turkey later this year and in the spring of 2013.

I've been waiting a long time for this! Turkey has always been near the top of my list of places on this planet that I want to check out (and it's a long list). Fares are *never* cheap though, and usually hover around a minimum of $1300-$1400 roundtrip after taxes.

Air Transat tends to make their biggest price cuts to Europe sometime within a month of departure. They're focused on mostly April/May cuts at the moment, but even some June prices have been slashed.

Huge fare war from Vancouver to Amsterdam - $608 roundtrip after taxes - affecting fares up to May 2012

There's a huge fare war to Amsterdam (AMS) going on at the moment. You do see the occasional charter flight on Air Transat to Amsterdam that drops down to this level, but it's extremely rare to see many of the major airlines drop a price to Europe like this that affects such a large range of dates.
