Thanks for flagging this deal, Chris. Was able to book two flights this morning for my parents to visit Hong Kong for the first time in more than a decade. They are ecstatic and we appreciate the work you do!
No problem, glad it helped out the parents. Thanks for checking it out!
Hi Chris. Me again with a quick question. I had booked this flight deal for my parents through my travel credit card booking platform (powered by Expedia), got the price that you listed along with some travel points as a bonus. I've had the e-tickets issued, itinerary and receipt from Expedia in hand.
Then went direct through HK Airlines and was able to pick and pay for seat selection for my dad in a separate transaction, but unable to do so for my mom. Charge for the seat selection went through and is posted on my credit card.
However, original charge for the flights is still listed as pending, over a week now. And still haven't been able to figure out why it won't let me select and pay for my mom's seat selection either. Is this common with HK Airlines?
Just booked for my parents for October 1-11. They weren't ready to book the last time you posted this but now they are. Thanks so much, Chris!
No problem Carol, hope they have a great trip!
Great Find, but I'm not able to find this deal for any other time than in May
Thanks for sharing Chris. Just a tip for anyone else interested, I booked through HK Airlines directly for Sept 20 - Oct 06. Despite pricing in HKD, with conversion I paid $576 CAD. Lots of dates in Sept/Oct. This was for economy with 1 check in bag and 1 carry on included.
Thanks Darren! I've updated the post with some additional instructions for booking these in HKD (Hong Kong Dollars). The lowest prices at the moment seem to be 3766 HKD which works out to between $675 and $694 CAD roundtrip (depending on whether or not you use a credit card that avoids foreign exchange fees). $576 CAD would be closer to 3200 HKD, I'll keep an eye out for those.
No worries Chris! I paid 3143 HKD per person before the 66 HKD processing fee added at checkout. Paid with my Visa that doesn't charge foreign exchange fees, and the posted transaction came out to $1152 CAD for two!
The dates we picked ended up being $793 ea. Still an excellent deal. Off for dim sum in September.
Hi! Just wondering - I set it to "CAN/EN" when looking through the HKA website so it shows in CAD. When I go to pay, will I be able to use a Canadian CC and not be charged conversion? I noticed the post and other commenters have been paying in HKD with conversion
Hi Shirtina,
After changing it to "CAN/EN" I just went through a mock booking to check it out.
The price came up as $683 CAD roundtrip for the cheapest flights which is great. And then there's an $11 CAD processing fee bringing it up to $694 CAD. Still fine.
But then I noticed this info beside 'Please select your payment method' on the final page:
"For payment by Visa or Mastercard, you can choose to pay in one of the above currencies to ensure certainty of the amount charged to your credit cards.
The currency exchange rate applied to your payment is based on a rate determined by a third-party foreign exchange provider, plus a markup of 9%."
So there's a ridiculous markup (on top of an unknown exchange rate) if you choose to book these on the Canadian dollar version of the website.
It's similar to when you're in a foreign country and the restaurant asks if you would like to be charged in Canadian dollars. Never choose that option.
It may seem like a good idea, but what's really happening when you select that option is that the machine's provider is determining the exchange rate when calculating the amount you will be charged in $CAD.
I guarantee that this will be an even more inflated exchange rate than the one that Visa or Mastercard uses which is a known value.
What you want to do is select the option to be charged in the currency of the country you're in, and let Visa or Mastercard use their typical 3% inflated exchange rate (and even better, pay with a credit card that avoids this markup)
I think the situation is the same here with Hong Kong Airlines. You want to be charged in HKD so that the foreign exchange rate is coming from Visa or Mastercard, and even better, pay with a card that avoids the foreign exchange fee.
Thanks for checking that Chris! Reading into the fine print, it looks like economy no longer does 2 pieces checked anymore - only 1 and no hot meals served, only snack and drink. I inquired with a few travel agencies and they've given me information all over the board! some say that food is still included, some say it's still 2 pieces etc.
Does anyone have any insight who have travelled with HKA recently?
