Is it possible to extend the layover in Mexico City?
Aeromexico has never really been one for allowing extended layovers without increasing the price. It seems to add about $200 CAD to the price.
example searches to start with:
Vancouver to Ixtapa, extended stay in MEX
If you keep the stay to 1 night in MEX the price doesn't increase from $389, but that's not exactly an extended stay.
You could also try a Multi-City like this, with the flight not included between MEX and the second city...
Vancouver to Ixtapa and then MEX to Vancouver
And then look for a cheap one way in between:
MEX to Ixtapa
You can still find cheap flights involving Huatulco if you fly into Mexico City, and then home from Huatulco
1. Start with a Google Flights search like this one:
Google Flights: Vancouver to Mexico City and then Huatulco to Vancouver
Try the following dates:
Departure dates: Nov 2, 3
Return dates with 3 hour layovers: Nov 7, 9, 10
Return dates (all): Nov 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
And then look for a cheap one way from Mexico City to Huatulco:
Google Flights: MEX to Huatulco
You can still find cheap flights involving Merida if you fly into Mexico City, and then home from Merida
1. Start with a Google Flights search like this one:
Google Flights: Vancouver to Mexico City and then Merida to Vancouver

Wow - even if you just wanted to go to Mexico City - this is a great deal! Aeromexico flights have been expensive this year. We paid 1,400 for Air Canada on Nov. 30 with return in January (Aeromexico was 1900). I prefer the service on Aeromexico (free meal, food + they are nice!)
Too late for us - but I am very happy to see that flights to Mex are coming down.
PS - Huatulco and Merida are both fabulous! Merida is a beautifully preserved colonial city (inland but a short bus ride to the beach, Uxmal and cenotes). Huatulco is set on a pristine coastline with several beach and bay options. There are big resorts on some Huatulco bays but we loved staying in an AirBnB (very affordable) in the very charming town of La Crucecita (with restaurants that punch way above their weight and a plaza that comes alive at night). Highly recommended!
Bought and ready to go! Thank you so much!
Was wondering if one can stopover in Mexico city? From what I read you cannot but just wanted to hear if someone has?
Booked!
Love Hualtuco
Thanks!
Have a great time Kevin!
Nickolas: I added some info about extending the layover in MEX. Aeromexico has never really been one for allowing extended layovers without increasing the price.
Thanks Chris
That was very helpful, I wonder why the flight get so much cheaper if you fly mexico city one way and then on the way back Ixtapa-mexciocity- vancouver. Weird.
