What is JAL's new booking policy? Does it allow change or cancellation at no charge?

JAL just extended their rebooking and cancellation waiver yesterday.

As of right now it covers flights departing up to August 31, 2020 (this is *likely* to be extended as time goes on, but not guaranteed).

refund: "Passengers who wish to change or refund your ticket due to flight suspension, flight reduction, or immigration restrictions, change/refund is available regardless of the ticket issue date. Refund without charge is available regardless of the fare rules."

free date change: new dates must be before March 31, 2021 (excluding December 15, 2020 - January 15, 2021).

In other words, if I were to book now for a 2021 flight, I would still have to pay a cancellation fee?

Yes, if you look at that link above, where it shows...

    Tickets issued on/before June 4, 2020
For flights departing February 28 - August 31, 2020 inclusive

...as being the tickets that JAL is covering with special conditions that allow for free cancellations, date changes, etc.

Now, a person could buy a 2021 flight now (not currently covered), and then sometime down the road, JAL might decide to change that date range to:

    Tickets issued on/before September 4, 2020
    For flights departing Sep 30th, 2020 - May 31, 2021 inclusive

...and the ticket that person bought in June would be covered.

That's basically what airlines have been doing since March, extending the date ranges of their 'flexible booking policies' due to COVID as time goes on.

But as of right now, JAL has not updated their policies to include tickets that were purchased after June 4th.

Looks like JAL updated their website:
Ticket issue date: Tickets issued on/before June 11, 2020
Flight date: For flights departing February 28 - August 31, 2020 inclusive..

And of course the one free change: flights on/before March 31, 2021 (excluding December 15, 2020 - January 15, 2021)...

Thanks Andy! At this point it seems like they must be adjusting it week by week, or even day by day.

Thanks for the notification Chris, I've bought 3 great flights to Japan through yvrdeals since 2015, all $470-$650. So awesome!

I'm wondering two things- first, if I buy a $600 flight through Air Canada (for September,) and have to change it (because covid restrictions haven't lifted) to a $1300 flight at a later date, I have to pay the additional $700, right? The no fee stipulation just means I don't get charged the usual $200 flight change fee?

Second- does anyone have thoughts on the stability of JAL? I'd hate to put $600 into a company than then "restructures" like it did in 2010 (2012?) and lose my ticket.

    Thanks so much!

No problem Daniel, I'm glad they've helped!

Yes, that is true, Air Canada is waiving the typical '$200 change fee' for an international flight, but the fare difference will still apply.

This does vary by airline. ANA for example, allowed me to change the dates on a flight to Japan for free, without charging the difference in fare. Although the new dates had to be before December (it remains to be seen what will happen if that flight is also a no-go due to COVID, and if ANA will allow another free date extension).
