The flight from Vancouver to Hanoi, Vietnam has 1 stop in Tokyo on the way there.
The flight from Hanoi to Tokyo is nonstop.
The flight from Tokyo, Japan back to Vancouver is also nonstop.
You can also find flights from Vancouver to Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City and back to Vancouver for $784 CAD roundtrip (see below).

- Play around with the dates to give yourself more or less time in either country.
- Try the following start and end dates...
Tip: Once you've entered your start and end dates on Google Flights or Kayak, play around with the middle date to give yourself more or less time in Vietnam or Japan. If you can't find any cheap ones, try a new set of start and end dates.
NOTE: If you go to the Japan Airlines website and try a Multi-City search you may be able to find dates beyond March 2024.

Many airlines list 'fuel surcharges' as one of their various taxes and fees. The airlines can essentially set this number to whatever they want. One airline might set their fuel surcharge to $300 for a flight from Vancouver to Tokyo. Another airline might set their fuel surcharge to $200 for a flight on the exact same route. It's supposed to represent the increasing cost of fuel.
So the bottom line is you always want to compare prices between airlines after all taxes and fees. That's the only price that matters. The price is $788 CAD roundtrip after all taxes and fees (including the fuel surcharge).

Juan: No, unfortunately not. JAL's flights from Vancouver to 'just Tokyo' and back are currently priced between $1480 and $1999 roundtrip.

This page on the Japan Airlines website shows the difference between the 3 levels of economy fares.
Special Saver - non refundable, fees to make changes
Special - non refundable, no fees to make changes
Flex - refundable, no fees to make changes
These prices are the Special Saver. With roundtrip flights on the JAL website you can choose the higher levels (which cost more of course). But I've noticed with Multi-City flights there doesn't seem to be a way to choose online. You might be able to call JAL and ask if there's a way for them to book Special or Flex over the phone.

Hi Sean, yes, unfortunately all airlines usually automatically cancel the remainder of your ticket once a leg is intentionally missed. This article attempts to explain why they do this.
Hi Marissa, in that article if you click under 'Some fares are available with no change fee for travel from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.' - it takes you to a page that lists 3 different types of economy fares. Have a look above at my reply to Paige with some info on the 3 types.

Hi Jessica, unfortunately it does look like the April and May dates are gone. September and October dates are still working.
Just to mention that limited April and May dates are working again. It seems to only be available if you use April 17th for the first leg. And May 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 for the third leg.
All dates are gone again in April.

UPDATE - March and early April 2024 dates are available for $798 CAD roundtrip. They are currently the only working dates. Added to the blog post.
Incredible deals, Thank you! Choose Jan 10th departure for under $840. YVR-NRT return alone is over $1500 on the same date. I get to visit Vietnam and Japan for this price, can't complain!
Can't seem to find the YVR-HAN-NRT-YVR deal anymore for any dates.
These do go quick. March and April 2024 dates are sold out. There are not currently any dates in the $700s roundtrip at any time of year. I've posted a list of the cheapest remaining dates in the $800s (Late August, September, November/December & January).
