Seattle to Vienna, Austria - $396 to $608 CAD roundtrip | Germany for $68 more

Vienna, Austria

British Airways has dropped the price of their flights from Seattle to Vienna, Austria down to between $396 and $608 CAD roundtrip including taxes.

$396 CAD roundtrip is the Basic Economy price, with *only* carry-on included.

$608 CAD roundtrip is the Regular Economy price with a checked bag included, which is about half the price of the best roundtrip prices from YVR to Austria (one of the more expensive places in Europe to fly to).

The flights have 1 stop each way, in London Heathrow.

Flights to Berlin or Munich, Germany are available for $68 more.

Update @ 9:30 AM PST - It looks like these have disappeared / sold out.

A warning about Basic Economy fares to Europe

The airlines are all trying to make it more and more difficult for people to understand what they're really paying for a flight to Europe these days.

As a general rule, if you find what appears to be a really well priced flight to Europe, you are more than likely looking at a Basic Economy price, which means it only includes carry-on luggage.

As another rule of thumb, add $160 CAD to this Basic Economy roundtrip price, which will help you compare against prices in previous years, when the airlines included a piece of checked luggage with their flights to Europe.

*BUT*, on some routes to Europe, the airlines are actually charging even more for checked luggage. With these flights to Austria for example, the airlines are charging $212 CAD roundtrip to add a piece of checked luggage.

The Basic Economy price needs to get *really* low (as it is in this case) in order for it to still be considered a great deal compared to previous years.

The airlines are all hoping you won't notice, care, or remember when prices included luggage, or take the time to do the math, because they now rely even more on extra fees, and making them difficult to compare, to turn a profit.

However, if you are someone who can fly to Europe with only carry-on luggage, Basic Economy fares can actually be a good thing.

Google Flights: Seattle to Munich, Germany (MUC) -- $464 CAD roundtrip

If you use a credit card that does not charge foreign exchange fees, it will be even cheaper.

Can someone please post the added costs in time and CA$ in getting to Seattle, parking your car, shuttle to airport, etc. If that costs more than ~CA$500 for a two week holiday then this "deal" might not be such a deal.

    Hi Barry,

This article might be of some help: The Official Guide For Canadians Flying Out Of U.S. Airports (from Vancouver and area)

I would estimate the tipping point for becoming 'worth the drive' to Seattle for most people is a savings of around $350/person.
