2-in-1 Trip: Vancouver (or Victoria) to Singapore and Japan - $678 CAD roundtrip including taxes
29
September
Now that Japan is finally re-opening on October 11th (no more mandatory guided tours, daily caps, or visa requirements) many of us have been wondering when there will be a great deal to Japan again.
Prior to the pandemic there would occasionally be some amazing price drops from Vancouver to Japan with roundtrip flights temporarily available in the high $400s to low $600s CAD roundtrip including taxes.
The last time that happened was actually two years ago, *during* the pandemic.
After that, prices to Japan kept creeping upwards and never looked back. Today they sit at approximately $1200-$1300 CAD roundtrip for the cheapest nonstop flights.
When Australia opened back up, the astronomical flight prices from North America came back down to earth. Yes the demand was higher, but more supply also became available (more flights).
Will the same thing happen with Japan? My gut would say yes, eventually. The same market forces that were leading to great deals to Japan between 2016 and 2019 should eventually return. It's just tough to predict when that will be. But is there anything we can do in the meantime?
As you may have seen recently the first strong deal to emerge from Vancouver to Asia was to Singapore. At $598 to $650 CAD roundtrip the price for YVR-SIN is pretty close to the great deals witnessed between 2018 and 2019.
Those prices are still around and using some Multi-City magic it's possible to turn them into a great "2-in-1 deal" where you can visit both Singapore *and* Japan for $678 CAD roundtrip.
UPDATE October 1 @ 1 PM PST - Quite a few dates have increased in price. I've updated the list of dates below that are still showing prices for between $692 and $733 CAD roundtrip.

Jun 7 to Jun 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26-30
Step 4 - For Leg #2 (the middle leg) try using a date that is 3 days after the date in Leg #1.
For example, if your start and end dates from above are May 18 to May 31, you could try searching for...
May 18 to May 21 to May 31.
This gives you a few days in Singapore.
If you try to reduce the number of days in Singapore to less than a few days, the flight price goes up.
You can however increase the number of days in Singapore without affecting the price.
NOTE: Most of these flights fly into Tokyo's NRT airport, and then home from Tokyo's HND airport. It's not an issue since you're spending time in Japan, but just be aware.

Hi Chris, just wanted to let you know that over the past few years I've taken two trips to Maui and one trip to Montreal because of your YVR Deals notifications. Thank you for saving me so much money and making these trips possible!!!!
Thanks ET! I'm glad they've helped. Thanks for checking it out!
is there any way to go direct to japan we dont need singapore
price options are shown up for Mytrip or flighthub, is it good idea to buy from them?
Yagiz: I added a link to the Multi-City search page on the ANA website in Step 1.
Jane: It's certainly possible to fly directly to Japan. The problem is that flights to 'just Japan' are not currently cheap. But if any great deals come up for a regular roundtrip flight to Japan, I'll let everyone know.
I was wondering if there is a way to go from Vancouver or Seattle to India with a layover in Dubai for 3 to 4 days
Thanks Chris, love going to those Asia cities! Just wondering if you know if it's possible to add Hong Kong or replace with one of those cities and still get a good deal? We need to visit family in HK.
Thanks!
Christie: Prior to the pandemic there would sometimes be great Multi-City fares involving Hong Kong and Japan. Or Hong Kong and Vietnam. Or Hong Kong and Taiwan. .
Right now East Asia is still rebuilding their capacity (number of flights and seats). While the rest of the world is somewhere between 75-90 percent back to 2019 capacity levels, Hong Kong and Cathay Pacific are at less than 20 percent of 2019 levels.
The director at the IATA even recently claimed that HKG has lost it's status as an international hub due to the continued lockdowns in China.
I'm sure one day we'll see interesting prices involving Hong Kong again, but they might need to rebuild that capacity first. Hong Kong recently announced the end of hotel quarantines, and Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express are ramping up flights which should help.
Is two over layover in HK enough time to board from YVR -> HK -> Singapore?
Hi Chris,
I just want to confirm, are these tix non-changeable and non-refundable?
Thank you!
Hi Chris,
The first flight from Vancouver to Singapore has a layover in Tokyo. Since the direct flights to Japan is more expensive, is it possible to take the first flight and leave the airport when arrive at Tokyo (specially if I travel with a carry on)?
Thanks Chris for this great deal find! I noticed the price went up even on the same website within the last couple of hours (checked around 1pm PT today for 780, and now it's 950). I guess price went up due to the increased search activities?
it kept saying processing error upon payment
Shadi: Unfortunately if you intentionally skip a leg the airlines will usually cancel the remaining legs on a ticket. This article attempts to explain why they do that.
Grace: No problem! Yes, once a particular set of dates has sold a certain number of tickets, the price may increase for those particular dates.
Thanks so much Chris! :) Just booked a flight (I actually got the Japan/Singapore trip deal when you shared it back in 2017 too haha!) Thanks for sharing all the great deals!
Chris! Thanks for the email! After spending all of 2 years watching videos about Japan during Covid, we booked the flight to Japan next year in May.
Thank you so so much :)
Pudding & Lego: Have a great time in Japan!
Hey there Chris,
Is it possible to get cheap Muti stop trips to Singapore and Melbourne? Have you seen anything like this?
Thanks so much
Hi Jen, I can't recall ever seeing anything unusually cheap involving SIN and MEL together. Cathay Pacific used to occasionally have some interesting prices involving Hong Kong and Australia.
But you can find Multi-City flights with Singapore Air for around $1500-$1600 CAD (Vancouver to Singapore to Melbourne to Vancouver), which is pretty much the same as a regular roundtrip flight to MEL right now.
Here is an example you can try starting with and play around with the dates.
I am interested in multi city in vietnam and Malaysia, should there one coming up. ty
Hi Chris, I'm having issues booking due to middle names! Do you happen to know if it is an issue if we don't put middle names on the ticket?
Hi Lia, including your middle name is not necessary when booking a flight.
I wonder if the deals are done now. All of the dates I entered in April and May are now unavailable to be purchased. I keep trying to purchase through Flighthub but I keep getting "Flights are no longer available to purchase" and offers me the same route for an extra $400 instead. =(
Quite a few dates have increased in price. I've updated the list of dates in the blog post that are still showing prices for between $692 and $733 CAD roundtrip.
Still waiting on the confirmation email from flighthub for this :( Hopefully they don't cancel my order!
Any update on dates for this?
Hi Chris,
Just wondering if you happen to know...I booked flights with ANA for YVR to NRT then NRT to SIN then SIN to YVR. However, for my checked baggage information, it only tells me that I get 2 baggages from YVR to SIN and SIN to YVR. But for my carry-on, I get 1 carry-on from YVR to NRT, NRT to SIN, SIN to NRT and NRT to YVR.
Does this mean that I wouldn't be able to get my checked baggage at NRT?
Thank you very much!
